Title: Wicked charms

Author:  Evanovich, Janet

Call #:   FIC Evanovich, J 400.3 2015

Summary: Lizzy and Diesel return once again in an all-new adventure in the #1 New York Times bestselling series from Janet Evanovich and her co-author, Phoef Sutton!

Murdered and mummified more than ninety years ago, bootlegger Collier “Peg Leg” Dazzle once found and re-hid a famous pirate’s treasure somewhere along the coast of New England. A vast collection of gold and silver coins and precious gems, the bounty also contains the Stone of Avarice — the very item reluctant treasure seeker, Lizzy Tucker, and her partner, Diesel, have been enlisted to find. While Lizzy would just like to live a quiet, semi-normal life, Diesel is all about the hunt. And this hunt is going to require a genuine treasure map and a ship worthy of sailing the seven seas . . . or at least getting them from Salem Harbor to Maine.

Greed is eternal and insatiable, and Lizzy and Diesel aren’t the only ones searching for the lost pirate’s chest. There are people who have dedicated their entire lives to finding it, and are willing to commit murder or make a deal with the devil, just to hold the fortune in their hands. One of those people may even be Wulf, Diesel’s deceptively charming and enigmatic cousin. Wulf desires the Stone of Avarice. He also desires Lizzy. It’s hard to say how far he’s willing to go to gain either one.

It’s a swashbuckling adventure full of raiders, monkeys, minions, and mayhem. Lizzy and Diesel are going to have to do everything they can to keep their heads above water and hope they are living a charmed life.--summary from Goodreads.com

Struggling with painful memories of his own recent divorce, Matt makes a drunken spectacle of himself and Ginger when he tries to make a pass at her, forcing Ginger to flee the scene in embarrassment.

But when Matt shows up at the flower shop determined to make amends, what started out as a humiliating first meeting blossoms into something much deeper than either of them expected. But if Ginger has the courage to embrace the future, and if Matt can finally learn to let go of the past, there may still be hope for a happy ending.--summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: This series by Robyn Carr tends to display deeper life issues than typical romance novels. In this particular title, the protagonist is working hard to recover her life after a divorce and the loss of her baby from SIDS. The character development was very realistic and the eventual romance was believable and entertaining. (Heather, Administration Department)

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: The premise for the Fool's Gold series by Susan Mallery is a little hard to believe (only attractive, talented inhabitants, perfect town run by an all-seeing mayor), The romance is fun and the on again, off again, romance cycle works. Title: Scents and sensibility

Author:   Quinn, Spencer

Call #:  MYS Quinn, S 100.8 2015

Summary: When a mysterious case of illegal cactus smuggling comes to their attention, Chet and his human P.I. companion, Bernie Little, find themselves in a prickly situation in this eighth book in the New York Times bestselling mystery series.

In the latest entry in the immensely popular Chet and Bernie mystery series, Private Investigator Bernie Little and his canine companion Chet return home to encounter some alarming developments. First off, Bernie's wall safe normally hidden behind the waterfall picture in the office is gone, and with it Bernie's grandfather's watch, their most valuable possession. And next door, old Mr. Parsons is under investigation for being in possession of a saguaro cactus illegally transplanted from the desert. Bernie and Chet go deep into the desert to investigate. Is it possible that such a lovely old couple have a terrible secret in their past?

Chet and Bernie discover bad things going on in the wilderness, far worse that cactus smuggling, and all connected to a strange but innocent-seeming desert festival called Arrow Bright. They unearth leads that take them back to a long-ago kidnapping that may not have been a kidnapping and threaten a ruthless and charismatic criminal with a cult following, a criminal who sees at once what Chet and Bernie mean to each other and knows how to exploit it.

Every bit as insightful (Booklist), humorous (Library Journal), and deliciously addictive (Publishers Weekly, starred review) as Quinn's previous books, Scents and Sensibility is a drool-worthy mystery that will have readers everywhere begging for more.--summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: I absolutely love the Chet and Bernie mystery series by Spencer Quinn. The books are written from the perspective of Chet (the private investigator's dog) and are full of wit, great characters, and action.) This title is one of my favorites from the series. Chet has some new things to say and his building relationship with his look- and act-alike puppy son (though he doesn't really catch the connection) is very entertaining. Title: The family Romanov : murder, rebellion & the fall of Imperial Russia

Author:   Fleming, Candace

Call #:  YA 947.083 Fleming, 2014

Summary: From the acclaimed author of Amelia Lost and The Lincolns comes a heartrending narrative nonfiction page-turner--and a perfect resource for meeting Common Core standards. When Russia's last tsar, Nicholas II, inherited the throne in 1894, he was unprepared to do so. With their four daughters (including Anastasia) and only son, a hemophiliac, Nicholas and his reclusive wife, Alexandra, buried their heads in the sand, living a life of opulence as World War I raged outside their door and political unrest grew into the Russian Revolution. Deftly maneuvering between the lives of the Romanovs and the plight of Russia's peasants and urban workers--and their eventual uprising--Fleming offers up a fascinating portrait, complete with inserts featuring period photographs and compelling primary-source material that brings it all to life.

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: Interesting look at the downfall of the Last Czar and his family. I liked that the author tries to be unbiased in her story, yet shows that clearly the Romanov Dynasty was flawed from the beginning. But she especially seemed sympathetic to them at the end of the story. Overall, a simple look at a tragic time in history, and well worth reading. (Doug, Administration Department)

Author:  Kenneally, Miranda

Call #:  YA FIC Kenneally, M 100.6 2015

Summary: Everyone at Hundred Oaks High knows that career mentoring day is a joke. So when Maya Henry said she wanted to be a rock star, she never imagined she’d get to shadow *the* Jesse Scott, Nashville’s teen idol. But spending the day with Jesse is far from a dream come true. He’s as gorgeous as his music, but seeing all that he’s accomplished is just a reminder of everything Maya’s lost: her trust, her boyfriend, their band, and any chance to play the music she craves. Not to mention that Jesse’s pushy and opinionated. He made it on his own, and he thinks Maya’s playing back up to other people’s dreams. Does she have what it takes to follow her heart—and go solo?--summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: I thought this book was pretty cool. I really liked the fact that Jesse and Maya were extremely different. Maya is a punk-rock girl who sings 80s music and Jesse is a Country star, and I think that's what made their relationship so entertaining. I do wish that the ending had been a little different. Title: The Wright brothers

Author:  McCullough, David G.

Call #:  BIO Wright, 2015

Summary: Two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize David McCullough tells the dramatic story-behind-the-story about the courageous brothers who taught the world how to fly: Wilbur and Orville Wright.

On a winter day in 1903, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, two unknown brothers from Ohio changed history. But it would take the world some time to believe what had happened: the age of flight had begun, with the first heavier-than-air, powered machine carrying a pilot.

Who were these men and how was it that they achieved what they did?

David McCullough, two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, tells the surprising, profoundly American story of Wilbur and Orville Wright.

Far more than a couple of unschooled Dayton bicycle mechanics who happened to hit on success, they were men of exceptional courage and determination, and of far-ranging intellectual interests and ceaseless curiosity, much of which they attributed to their upbringing. The house they lived in had no electricity or indoor plumbing, but there were books aplenty, supplied mainly by their preacher father, and they never stopped reading.

When they worked together, no problem seemed to be insurmountable. Wilbur was unquestionably a genius. Orville had such mechanical ingenuity as few had ever seen. That they had no more than a public high school education, little money and no contacts in high places, never stopped them in their mission to take to the air. Nothing did, not even the self-evident reality that every time they took off in one of their contrivances, they risked being killed.

In this thrilling book, master historian David McCullough draws on the immense riches of the Wright Papers, including private diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks, and more than a thousand letters from private family correspondence to tell the human side of the Wright Brothers' story, including the little-known contributions of their sister, Katharine, without whom things might well have gone differently for them.--summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: This was an interesting history of the Wright Brother's determination to successfully achieve powered flight. The family history was fascinating, and I loved how the family worked together and supported each other--especially the sister Katharine. The book also describes the many attempts the Wright Brothers made to perfect the art of flying. The audiobook is read by the author, and is a bit slow, but the information provided is a wonderfully detailed account of the Wright Brothers and family. (Melissa, South Branch)

Summary: "When seventeen year old Nara Kilday is murdered at the hands of an unknown assailant, the quiet suburb of Darlington Hills is turned upside down. As Nara's best friend Hazy grapples with the mystery of her friend's untimely demise, shocking secrets are uncovered that reveal a darker side to Nara that she never knew. Meanwhile, a hidden evil has emerged, raising an army of the undead bent on reshaping the world in its own image. Among the undead is Nara herself, whose miraculous return may signal the impending march towards Armageddon!" -- p. [4] of cover

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: The first book in this Ultimate Edition really grabbed me. I loved the art and there was a rhythm to the story. And best of all, it had the same feel to it as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But then towards the end, it lost it's focus. The main character just disappears from the story, we evidently jumped in time, and the rhythm was suddenly way off. In the end, it was still a fun, entertaining story but I hate reading a series when I suddenly realize the author has to plan or outline, and is just making it up as he goes along.

Interestingly, on Good Reads a female reader really hated it for it's portrayal of women. I didn't really pay attention to that when reading it, but looking back I can see that some people could be turned off by the risque art, which does go out of it's way to show a lot of short skirts and panties. Yet telling him how much she needs him, how much she loves him, feels like the biggest challenge of all. And if Miki really wants the missions to end for everyone, she’ll have to let go and be ready to fight when the walls between the Game and reality come crashing down. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned, it’s that she’s got a whole lot left to lose.

Crash is the pulse-pounding conclusion to the Game trilogy fans won’t want to miss.--summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: This is the last book in the Game series, and it was full of twists and turns. Some I liked, and some kind of broke my heart. I liked seeing how things wrapped up, and how Miki and Jackson made it through their last mission. (Kaitlynne, South Branch)

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: This book has been very helpful for me, as I have quite a few food allergies. Usually in food allergies books it will say if you are allergic to "a", then you can substitute with "b". In a lot of cases I am allergic to both, so that doesn't work. Title: Stiff : the curious lives of human cadavers

Author:  Roach, Mary

Call #:  611 Roach, 2003

Summary: Stiff is an oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. For two thousand years, cadavers—some willingly, some unwittingly—have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. In this fascinating account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries and tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them.--summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: After reading Mary Roach's book Gulp recently, I couldn't resist finding out what she had to say about the topic of cadavers. She is thorough in her research, and still manages to add humor to her science. This is book about the science, and who would have thought she could have made it this interesting. I learned a lot, made a few decisions about what I want to happen to my body when I die, and came away better informed. This book isn't for everyone, and if you are squeamish you might want to read something else. Roach approaches the topic with respect, but isn't afraid to ask the taboo questions or make uncomfortable observations--you know the kind we are all thinking, but are too afraid to voice ourselves. A fascinating book--can't wait to read another by this author. (Melissa, South Branch)

Title: Pegasus

Author:  Steel, Danielle

Call #:  FIC Steel, D 2014

Summary: Nicolas von Bingen and Alex von Hemmerle, titled members of the German aristocracy, have been best friends since childhood. Both widowers, they are raising their children - Nick's two lively boys and Alex's adored teenage daughter - in peace and luxury on the vast Bavarian estates that have belonged to their families for generations. While Nick indulges in more glamorous pursuits, Alex devotes himself to breeding the renowned white Lipizzaner horses that enthrall audiences throughout Europe with their ability to dance and spin on command, majestic creatures whose bloodlines are rare and priceless. But it is Nicolas's bloodline that changes everything, when his father receives a warning from a high-ranking contact inside the Wehrmacht. A secret from the past has left the family vulnerable to the rising tide of Nazism: Nick's mother, whom he never knew, was of Jewish descent. Suddenly Nicolas must flee Germany, wrenching his sons away from the only home they have known, sailing across the Atlantic for a new life in America. Their survival will depend on a precious gift from Alex, their only stake for the future: eight purebred horses, two of them stunning Lipizzaners. In Florida, where Nicolas joins the Ringling Brothers Circus, he becomes Nick Bing, with Alex's prize white stallion -- now named Pegasus -- the centerpiece of the show. A multigenerational narrative inspired by the best-selling author's own family history traces the efforts of an aristocratic German family to find refuge for themselves and their magnificent horses in post-World War II America

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: Listening to the Playaway and it's very good. It feels like a historical novel, set in the beginning of WWII, and is inspired by the authors own family history. Fleeing persecution, Nicolas and his two young sons go to America. With a gift of horses from his best friend Alex, they join the Ringling Bros. circus and start a new life. Of course there is a little romance built into the story too! (Susan, South Branch)

Title: Z-A Novel Of Zelda Fitzgerald

Summary: A tale inspired by the marriage of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald follows their union in defiance of her father's opposition and her abandonment of the provincial finery of her upbringing in favor of a scandalous flapper identity that gains her entry into the literary party scenes of New York, Paris and the French Riviera

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: A book in the same genre as The Paris Wife. This book is historical fiction about Zelda Fitzgerald. This book is written as if Zelda wrote it herself. You are immersed in the lives of the wild and fun Zelda Fitzgerald and her dashing husband, writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. It lets you take a peek into their lives, as if you are there. If you know anything about the Fitzgeralds, I highly recommend this. If you don't, it's still a good read. (Stephanie, Adult and Teen Department)

Title: Go Set A Watchman

Author:  Lee, Harper

Call #:  FIC Lee, H 2015

Summary: From Harper Lee comes a landmark new novel set two decades after her beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, To Kill a Mockingbird.

Maycomb, Alabama. Twenty-six-year-old Jean Louise Finch--"Scout"--returns home from New York City to visit her aging father, Atticus. Set against the backdrop of the civil rights tensions and political turmoil that were transforming the South, Jean Louise's homecoming turns bittersweet when she learns disturbing truths about her close-knit family, the town and the people dearest to her. Memories from her childhood flood back, and her values and assumptions are thrown into doubt. Featuring many of the iconic characters from To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman perfectly captures a young woman, and a world, in a painful yet necessary transition out of the illusions of the past--a journey that can be guided only by one's conscience.

Written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman imparts a fuller, richer understanding and appreciation of Harper Lee. Here is an unforgettable novel of wisdom, humanity, passion, humor and effortless precision--a profoundly affecting work of art that is both wonderfully evocative of another era and relevant to our own times. It not only confirms the enduring brilliance of To Kill a Mockingbird, but also serves as its essential companion, adding depth, context and new meaning to an American classic.-Summary from Goodreads

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: I enjoyed the words of Harper Lee and her style. I, too, was disappointed with the character of Atticus in this book. Maybe she made him a more tolerant man in "To Kill a Mockingbird" because she too was not totally happy with him as was Scout. (DeEtta, Russiaville Branch)

Title: At the water's edge

Author:  Gruen, Sara

Call #:  FIC Gruen, S 2015

Summary: In her stunning new novel, Gruen returns to the kind of storytelling she excelled at in Water for Elephants: a historical timeframe in an unusual setting with a moving love story. Think Scottish Downton Abbey.

After embarrassing themselves at the social event of the year in high society Philadelphia on New Year’s Eve of 1942, Maddie and Ellis Hyde are cut off financially by Ellis’s father, a former army Colonel who is already embarrassed by his son’s inability to serve in WWII due to his being colorblind. To Maddie’s horror, Ellis decides that the only way to regain his father’s favor is to succeed in a venture his father attempted and very publicly failed at: he will hunt the famous Loch Ness monster and when he finds it he will restore his father’s name and return to his father’s good graces (and pocketbook). Joined by their friend Hank, a wealthy socialite, the three make their way to Scotland in the midst of war. Each day the two men go off to hunt the monster, while another monster, Hitler, is devastating Europe. And Maddie, now alone in a foreign country, must begin to figure out who she is and what she wants. The novel tells of Maddie’s social awakening: to the harsh realities of life, to the beauties of nature, to a connection with forces larger than herself, to female friendship, and finally, to love.--summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: This book shares the abusive/misguided husband theme with the author's Water for Elephants but this is a combination of historical fiction, romance, and ghost story.. Title: Below stairs : the classic kitchen maid's memoir that inspired "Upstairs, downstairs" and "Downton Abbey"

Author:  Powell, Margaret

Call #:  BIO Powell, M, 2012

Summary: This work is a kitchen-maid's through-the-key hole memoir of life in the great houses of England. At fifteen, she arrived at the servants' entrance to begin her life as a kitchen maid in 1920s England. The lowest of the low, her world was one of stoves to be blacked, vegetables to be scrubbed, mistresses to be appeased, and even bootlaces to be ironed. Work started at 5:30 am and went on until after dark. In this memoir, the author tells her tales of service with wit, warmth, and a sharp eye. From the gentleman with a penchant for stroking housemaids' curlers, to raucous tea dances with errand boys, to the heartbreaking story of Agnes the pregnant under-parlourmaid, fired for being seduced by her mistress's nephew, this book evokes the long vanished world of masters and servants portrayed in Downton Abbey and Upstairs, Downstairs. This is the remarkable true story of an indomitable woman, who, though her position was lowly, never stopped aiming high. --summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: This is a highly readable memoir about life as a domestic servant for the British upper classes between WWI and WWII. Since the author worked exclusively as a kitchen maid, her experience is solely behind the scenes. (Meredith, Russiaville Branch)

Title: In the garden of beasts : love, terror, and an American family in Hitler's Berlin

Author:  Larson, Erik

Call #:  943.086 Larson, 2011

Summary: The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history.

A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another, including with the suprisingly honorable first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and drafts of frightening new laws begin to circulate. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance—and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler’s true character and ruthless ambition.

Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror. --summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: What events took place before America joined WWII? Find out as Larson makes history come alive. When President Roosevelt, sent Dodd, America’s ambassador to Germany, neither knew what an important role Dodd would play in this time of history. Dodd had to meet with Hitler! Find out how that went! I learned so much about Hitler and I am convinced the world was trying to ignore him and his actions!

Title: All the light we cannot see

Author:   Doerr, Anthony

Call #:  FIC Doerr, A 2014

Summary: From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, a stunningly ambitious and beautiful novel about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie Laure lives with her father in Paris within walking distance of the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of the locks (there are thousands of locks in the museum). When she is six, she goes blind, and her father builds her a model of their neighborhood, every house, every manhole, so she can memorize it with her fingers and navigate the real streets with her feet and cane. When the Germans occupy Paris, father and daughter flee to Saint-Malo on the Brittany coast, where Marie-Laure's agoraphobic great uncle lives in a tall, narrow house by the sea wall. In another world in Germany, an orphan boy, Werner, grows up with his younger sister, Jutta, both enchanted by a crude radio Werner finds. He becomes a master at building and fixing radios, a talent that wins him a place at an elite and brutal military academy and, ultimately, makes him a highly specialized tracker of the Resistance. Werner travels through the heart of Hitler Youth to the far-flung outskirts of Russia, and finally into Saint-Malo, where his path converges with Marie-Laure. Doerr's gorgeous combination of soaring imagination with observation is electric. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, All the Light We Cannot See is his most ambitious and dazzling work.-- Provided by publisher

The Reestablishment will do anything to crush the resistance . . . including killing everyone Adam cares about.

The Shatter Me series is perfect for fans who crave action-packed young adult novels with tantalizing romance like Divergent and The Hunger Games. This captivating story, which combines the best of dystopian and paranormal, was praised as “a thrilling, high-stakes saga of self-discovery and forbidden love” by Ransom Riggs, bestselling author of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. --summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book:I am a huge fan of Tahereh Mafi's Shatter Me Series, and I am so glad that I finally took the time to read these novellas. You got to see that Warner isn't the bad guy he originally seemed to be (You would also know that if you read the other books). But you also get to see that Adam isn't the nice guy he seems to be either (I learned some things about him that surprised and disappointed me). (Kaitlynne, South Branch)

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: I really liked Robin Benway's other novels, The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May, and June, and her Also Known As series, so it was no surprise that I fell in love with Emmy & Oliver as well. I liked how Emmy and Oliver got along, and helped each other grow throughout the book. Emmy was there to support Oliver when he got home, and she listened to what he had to say without judging him. And Oliver encouraged Emmy to go after her dreams (even if it meant that it was her turn to leave him). (Kaitlynne, South Branch)

And maybe she never wants to.

Told in alternating sections, LAST YEAR'S MISTAKE is a charming and romantic debut about loving, leaving, and letting go.--summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: Have you ever wanted to move somewhere new and just completely reinvent yourself? That's exactly what Kelsey did. She thought she was happy with her new life until David showed up again...

I loved this book, but it broke my heart that Kelsey and David were pulled apart by a few silly misunderstandings. The only thing that I didn't like about this book was the fact that it felt like things were left unresolved with all of Kelsey's "friends" from Connecticut. I was kind of hoping she would get a little more closure. (Kaitlynne, South Branch)

Title:The Paris wife

Author: McLain, Paula

Call #: FIC McLain, P 2011

Summary: A deeply evocative story of ambition and betrayal, The Paris Wife captures a remarkable period of time and a love affair between two unforgettable people: Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley.

Chicago, 1920: Hadley Richardson is a quiet twenty-eight-year-old who has all but given up on love and happiness—until she meets Ernest Hemingway and her life changes forever. Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and volatile group—the fabled “Lost Generation”—that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald.

Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill-prepared for the hard-drinking and fast-living life of Jazz Age Paris, which hardly values traditional notions of family and monogamy. Surrounded by beautiful women and competing egos, Ernest struggles to find the voice that will earn him a place in history, pouring all the richness and intensity of his life with Hadley and their circle of friends into the novel that will become The Sun Also Rises. Hadley, meanwhile, strives to hold on to her sense of self as the demands of life with Ernest grow costly and her roles as wife, friend, and muse become more challenging. Despite their extraordinary bond, they eventually find themselves facing the ultimate crisis of their marriage—a deception that will lead to the unraveling of everything they’ve fought so hard for.

A heartbreaking portrayal of love and torn loyalty, The Paris Wife is all the more poignant because we know that, in the end, Hemingway wrote that he would rather have died than fallen in love with anyone but Hadley. --summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: The Paris Wife is an enjoyable historical novel about Hemingway and his first wife. The name-dropping is pretty fun--lots of writers and artists who were in Paris at the same time as Ernest and Hadley (Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein and several others). Title:Thirteen reasons why

Author: Asher, Jay

Call #:  YA FIC Asher, J 2007

Summary: Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers thirteen cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, his classmate and crush who committed suicide two weeks earlier.

On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list.

Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, debut author Jay Asher weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect teen readers. --summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: One book leads to another and in this case, the author of this book wrote the Forward to Positive so I wanted to find out about it. Listened to it in audio on the advice of a friend, and found it an engrossing experience. Hannah leaves audio tapes behind after her suicide as a learning experience and blackmail for those who have hurt her, or in some cases tried to help her. It's a story of how a sensitive person is deeply hurt by rumors, teasing, and abuse by friends, both male and female. This has echoes for people of all ages as we all could be better listeners and more compassionate. (Medora, Adult and Teen Department)

Title: Who built that : awe-inspiring stories of American tinkerpreneurs

Author:  Malkin, Michelle

Call #: 609.22 Malkin, 2015

Summary: Firebrand conservative columnist, commentator, Internet entrepreneur, and #1 New York Times bestselling author Michelle Malkin tells the fascinating, little-known stories of the inventors who have contributed to American exceptionalism and technological progress. In July 2012, President Obama infamously proclaimed: “If you've got a business you didnt build that. Somebody else made that happen.” Malkin takes readers on an eclectic journey of American capitalism, from the colonial period to the Industrial Age to the present, spotlighting awe-inspiring and little-known “tinkerpreneurs” who achieved their dreams of doing well by doing good. You'll learn how famous patent holders Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain championed the nations unique system of intellectual property rights; how glass manufacturing mavericks Edward Libbey and Mike Owens defied naysayers to revolutionize food, beverage, and pharmaceutical packaging; how penniless Croatian immigrant Anthony Maglica started his $400 million Maglite flashlight business in a rented garage; and many more riveting stories that explain our country's fertile climate for scientific advancement and entrepreneurship. To understand who we are as people, we need to first understand what motivates Americas ordinary and extraordinary makers and risk-takers. Driven by her own experience as a second-generation beneficiary of the American Dream, Malkin skillfully and passionately rebuts collectivist orthodoxy to celebrate the engineers, mechanics, designers, artisans, and relentless tinkerers of all backgrounds who embody our nations spirit of self-made entrepreneurialism.--summary from Goodreads.com

Title: Food : a love story

Author: Gaffigan, Jim

Call #:  818.602 Gaffigan, 2014

Summary: “What are my qualifications to write this book? None really. So why should you read it? Here’s why: I’m a little fat. If a thin guy were to write about a love of food and eating I’d highly recommend that you do not read his book.”

Bacon. McDonalds. Cinnabon. Hot Pockets. Kale. Stand-up comedian and author Jim Gaffigan has made his career rhapsodizing over the most treasured dishes of the American diet (“choking on bacon is like getting murdered by your lover”) and decrying the worst offenders (“kale is the early morning of foods”). Fans flocked to his New York Times bestselling book Dad is Fat to hear him riff on fatherhood but now, in his second book, he will give them what they really crave—hundreds of pages of his thoughts on all things culinary(ish). Insights such as: why he believes coconut water was invented to get people to stop drinking coconut water, why pretzel bread is #3 on his most important inventions of humankind (behind the wheel and the computer), and the answer to the age-old question “which animal is more delicious: the pig, the cow, or the bacon cheeseburger?”--summary from Goodreads.com

Title: Thunderstruck

Author: Larson, Erik

Call #: 364.1523 Larson, 2006

Summary: In Thunderstruck, Erik Larson tells the interwoven stories of two men--Hawley Crippen, a very unlikely murderer, and Guglielmo Marconi, the obsessive creator of a seemingly supernatural means of communication--whose lives intersect during one of the greatest criminal chases of all time.

Set in Edwardian London and on the stormy coasts of Cornwall, Cape Cod, and Nova Scotia, Thunderstruck evokes the dynamism of those years when great shipping companies competed to build the biggest, fastest ocean liners, scientific advances dazzled the public with visions of a world transformed, and the rich outdid one another with ostentatious displays of wealth. Against this background, Marconi races against incredible odds and relentless skepticism to perfect his invention: the wireless, a prime catalyst for the emergence of the world we know today. Meanwhile, Crippen, "the kindest of men," nearly commits the perfect crime.

With his superb narrative skills, Erik Larson guides these parallel narratives toward a relentlessly suspenseful meeting on the waters of the North Atlantic. Along the way, he tells of a sad and tragic love affair that was described on the front pages of newspapers around the world, a chief inspector who found himself strangely sympathetic to the killer and his lover, and a driven and compelling inventor who transformed the way we communicate. Thunderstruck presents a vibrant portrait of an era of séances, science, and fog, inhabited by inventors, magicians, and Scotland Yard detectives, all presided over by the amiable and fun-loving Edward VII as the world slid inevitably toward the first great war of the twentieth century. Gripping from the first page, and rich with fascinating detail about the time, the people, and the new inventions that connect and divide us, Thunderstruck is splendid narrative history from a master of the form.--summary from Goodreads.com

Staff Member's Thoughts on This Book: Larsen takes non-fiction and turns it into a great read. History, murder, science, and technology, and the beginning of wireless telegraphy which we all use, and take for granted, everyday! The technical history of communication. Find out what happens to Marconi and Crippen in this book. (Mary, Genealogy and Local History Department)
